Pylos, historically known as Navarino, is a seaside town that is administratively part of the municipality of Pylos – Nestor and is located west of the Prefecture of Messinia, and until 2010 was the seat of the homonymous municipality. It is known for its ancient, medieval and modern history.

According to the last census conducted in 2011, the Municipality of Pylos – Nestor had a population of 21.077 inhabitants, the Municipal Unit of Pylos 5.287 inhabitants, the Municipal Community of Pylos 2.767 inhabitants, while Pylos had 2.345 inhabitants and was the sixth largest city in the Regional Region.

The modern town of Pylos is located in the southwestern part of the Peloponnese, next to the Ionian coast. In addition to modern homes, many of the older stone houses with spacious courtyards, rooftops and balconies are also preserved. Most of them are built mainly between narrow streets, others are built with stone cobblestones and few others with stairs.

Pylos Port is also an important shipping center of western Messinia with upward commercial and tourist development.
